Ten questions to Dustin Jefferson Onghanseng – CEO of uHoo

1. Who is Dustin Jefferson Onghanseng?
My name is Dustin Jefferson Onghanseng. I am 33 years old and born in Manila, Philippines. I have a Bachelor’s of Computing from the National University of Singapore and an MBA from HKUST. I started my career as a management consultant with BDO first then with Deloitte prior to being the co-founder and CEO of uHoo.

2. What role does PropTech have in your life?
I am all about people’s health, environment and sustainability. We spend 90% of our time indoors and the air we breathe in indoors is 2 to 5 times worse than outdoors. This puts people at risk and properties need technology to be able to monitor this to ensure that actions are being taken to keep everyone healthy and safe. You can only manage what you can measure.

3. What developments do you see in the field of PropTech?
Two main things – sensors / data and use of green / eco-friendly building materials

4. What is the core business of uHoo and what technology are you using?
uHoo uses data on indoor air quality to bring health, safety and energy savings to commercial and residential buildings. This is done with the uHoo indoor air quality sensor together with its accompanying mobile and desktop apps. Indoor air quality is monitored continuously, minute-by-minute, and alerts are sent to property owners / managers if issues arise or when issues are about to arise to prevent them. uHoo empowers property owners / managers to be smarter and more pro-active in building management resulting in lower maintenance costs, energy savings, healthier occupants and more green building points / credits.

5. Where do you want to go with uHoo, what’s your ambition?
We want to map the world’s indoor air quality in real time and utilize this data to influence health and construction policies of the World Health Organization and different governments.

6. Which project or reached goal makes you very proud of and why?
We started uHoo in the dorm rooms of our MBA program, eventually dropped our classes to pursue uHoo full time, built the product ourselves, grew the team to five people and today have a smart city project in Germany and multiple corporate pilots in Europe and Asia. All done in a span of 2.5 years.

7. What element (s) do you think is essential to be successful as a company in PropTech?
Belief and confidence that you can make dinosaurs move and of course passion and grit towards your long-term vision.

8. Which companies / startups do you think are very promising in Prop Tech and why do you think they are?
Any company that deals with sensing or data that addresses problems that properties face would be promising in this industry.

9. I get my (PropTech) inspiration from?
Observing the structures of buildings, offices, malls, homes, etc. It just strikes you when something doesn’t seem right and you’d want to make it right.

10. Which companies you would like to do business?
Hotel chains, schools, property developers / managers, hospitals. Most importantly, companies who believe in progress and look to the future with open eyes and without bias.
